EA had an idea, "hey lets only let people install Spore three times ever, that will teach those damn pirates". Well they are quickly being proven wrong, while having brisk opening sales most likely due to not knowing about the anti-piracy measures taken, it is quickly becoming one of the most torrented games out. I myself was planning on buying the game, but with this stupid measure in place i am going to wait to see if EA does the right thing and axes this measure. At the moment people who pirate the game can work around this measure allowing them to install it any time they want while those who legitimately buy it are getting a lesser product. I personally reformat my computer as a maintenance thing at least two to three times a year, so do i really want to buy Spore for just a year? Right now that answer is no, so i am not going to be picking up Spore for the time being. I personally am insulted by this measure and find it hard to believe anyone thought it would work. Piracy is going to happen, even food stores work stolen product into thier budget so game companies should stop trying to fight it by making life harder on those who are actually buying it.
Edit: Ars Technica has done a great article on spores DRM http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080916-ars-puts-spore-drm-to-the-testwith-a-surprising-result.html
Its worth a read.

The greatest blunder of EA's anti-piracy is that it *only* punishes the legitimate copies. Very mixed signals, I'd say! They only had to look as far as Steam for a valid anti-piracy option.
I personally like steam, once they fixed most of the more annoying bugs there are only tiny things left to complain about which squat when you can go to another computer and install every one of your games by just clicking install
steam is not so bad... but even steam was cracked... i don't think it is possible to stop people from cracking games... its going to happen spend there time making better games with good online content. this encourages people to buy the game.
