Playing Prey just makes you wonder, why? Why am I going through this door vs that door. Why is this portal getting me closer to my goal? What is that goal?
Don't misunderstand me though, the gameplay is pretty entertaining and the graphics are solid. It's just that the game is dry on purpose. I'm tired of shooting these aliens coming at me just because they're abducting my people. Whoopdee shit, it's a tired concept and if a game is going to be based off of it, it better have a more objective based situation. Unfortunately, Prey is lacking in objectives until you get pretty close to the end which still keeps you wondering what is going on.
Aside from the aimlessness with which you go crashing through this large alien spaceship, the game plays great with crafty situations in which the plays on gravity add a certain freshness to running and gunning which has become all too rote. Issues for me arise though when guns lack "punch". "Punch" is when your shots have stopping power which puts an advancing enemy at bay and has the enemy reflect the damage you're inflicting on them. It just doesn't seem interactive when your shots do not affect an enemies movement, let alone, their animation. Prey's first and often used main weapon just does not give that satisfaction to the player and that took away from what otherwise was an entertaining romp through a spaceship filled with amazing gravity/portal affects.
Prey is a great game for renting to experience a good amount of it's action, but there just doesn't seem to be a satisfying single player experience to come back to. Of course if you're dying for a new online shooter, have at it.
